Shakespeare's Stratford-upon-Avon

The picturesque market town of Stratford-upon-Avon is the home of William Shakespeare.

Five Shakespeare Houses in and around the town offer a unique insight into the life and times of the world's greatest poet and dramatist. Shakespeare's Birthplace, Anne Hathaway's Cottage, Mary Arden's Farm, Hall's Croft and Nash's House/New Place are all meticulously preserved, charting centuries of both English and Shakespeare history. Discover everything you ever wanted to know about Stratford's favourite son from experienced and informative guides in each of the Houses. Each House also has its own delightful garden. All of the Shakespeare Houses can be explored via City Sightseeing open top, hop-on, hop-off bus tours.

Visit where Shakespeare was baptised and where he lies buried in Holy Trinity Church which rests on the banks of the River Avon. The church holds records of both. On the river, see colourful barges, graceful swans and rowing boats. You can even hire a punt or go on a river cruise.

Make your stay in Stratford-upon-Avon complete with a theatre performance by the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC). Enjoy a performance at the RSC's new 1,000 seat Courtyard Theatre, which was specially designed as a prototype for the thrust stage auditorium which the new Royal Shakespeare Theatre will house.

There are plenty of family attractions including Stratford Butterfly Farm and Stratford Mini Golf. Children will enjoy making their own rubbing at the Stratford Brass Rubbing Centre. Old and young alike will also enjoy a visit to The Falstaffs Experience, a living museum where history is brought to life with theatrical and atmospheric settings or visit the Creaky Cauldron which has a museum of Witchcraft and Wizardology which is one of Stratford's 'must visit' attractions.

The town has a great range of quality shops, from antique centres, speciality cheese shops and independent boutiques to contemporary jewellers and popular fashion stores. Its excellent selection of first class shopping and dining, combined with world-class culture, make Stratford-upon-Avon the perfect choice for a short break or longer holiday.
